For those who don’t know the difference between the knockdown vehicles Ato Forson is talking about, here is it…..
Semi-Knocked Down (SKD) Vehicles
An SKD vehicle is a unit that has been fully or mostly assembled in the country of origin, and then partially disassembled just enough to fit into shipping containers or to bypass steep complete-vehicle import duties.
What it looks like: Major components like the engine, transmission, body shell, and chassis are usually pre-assembled. Things like wheels, bumpers, mirrors, and seats might be detached.
Why it is used: It is ideal for smaller markets where building a full assembly factory is not financially viable, but where shipping a fully built car (CBU - Completely Built Unit) incurs prohibitive luxury or import taxes.
Assembly Process: Reassembly is relatively simple, often taking place in a basic workshop rather than a high-tech factory.
Completely Knocked Down / Total Knocked Down (CKD) Vehicles
A CKD (or Total Knocked Down) vehicle is shipped as a collection of thousands of individual, unassembled parts.
What it looks like: Literally every component is separate—from the raw sheet metal for the body panels and individual engine blocks down to tiny screws, wires, and dashboard trims.
Why it is used: Governments impose much lower import tariffs on CKD kits to encourage foreign automakers to invest locally. This creates local manufacturing jobs, transfers technical skills, and boosts domestic industry.
Assembly Process: Requires a comprehensive, capital-intensive assembly plant. This process includes body welding, anti-corrosion dipping, painting, engine mounting, and rigorous quality testing.

Let all of the Ghana vehicles assembly plants who have taken advantage of the tax incentives determine whether they are into Semi knockdown or completely knockdown vehicles business or a combination of both. Their business structure will determine the truth. If they cheated, they should be made to pay some penalties for misrepresentation of imported goods at the port.
Ghana’s revenues would be great if government officials, with oversight, enforce the laws and prosecute those responsible for flouting the law. Where laws have loopholes and/or are outdated, it must be reviewed and enforced. No political parties agendas here. Just Ghana development agenda.
