The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has announced that the government has successfully brokered a resolution to the recent disruption in cross-border onion trade involving Ghana, Nigeria, and Niger.

The intervention follows recent tensions at the Adjen Kotoku Onion Market in Accra, where disputes among traders led to the blocking of trucks and delays in offloading cargo, creating a ripple effect across the regional supply chain.

The situation left several trucks stranded, raising concerns about potential financial losses due to spoilage and possible shortages in local markets.

During a meeting on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, with stakeholders from Ghana, Nigeria, and Niger, efforts were made to ensure that trade flows are restored quickly and fairly for all parties.

Ghanaian onion associations agreed to allow Nigerian trucks stranded in the country to offload their goods under a reciprocal arrangement.

“Nigerian stakeholders have committed to ensuring the same fair treatment for our traders operating across their borders, strengthening trust in the system,” the sector minister said.

Representatives from the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana also expressed their support, with one official noting, “We will facilitate the swift release of trucks bound for Ghana to ease the immediate pressure on traders and stabilize supply chains.”

Ofosu-Adjare assured that the government remains committed to cooperation and mutual understanding, recognising the vital role of uninterrupted trade in supporting livelihoods and ensuring regional food security.

Beyond addressing the immediate challenges, stakeholders agreed to develop a structured roadmap to prevent future disruptions, in line with regional trade protocols and improved coordination among the countries involved.
