The recently announced daily minimum wage, is woefully inadequate given current economic realities and regional benchmarks.

While Ghana's minimum wage stands at approximately GH¢18.15 per day, our key regional competitors have established significantly higher rates, placing our nation at a severe disadvantage:

· Ivory Coast: The guaranteed minimum interprofessional wage (SMG) is 75,000 CFA (approximately GH¢72) per month, translating to a daily rate that is multiple times higher than Ghana's.
· Senegal: The guaranteed minimum interprofessional wage (SMIG) is approximately 209.10 CFA (approximately GH¢42) per hour, for a standard 8-hour day.
· Burkina Faso: The guaranteed interprofessional minimum wage (SMIG) is set at 34,664 CFA (approximately GH¢34) per month.

This stark disparity demonstrates that Ghana's wage is not only low but uncompetitive. The inadequacy of this recent adjustment deepens the cost-of-living crisis, fuels the migration of skilled labour, and stifles domestic consumption.

We urgently call for an immediate review to establish a realistic and competitive daily minimum wage that reflects the dignity of the Ghanaian worker and the standards of our region.

Ghana has a mentality of traders making huge profits so things remain expensive, salaried workers always wanting increments in double digits even if exchange rate and inflation justify single digit increments, politicians and their cronies chopping left right and center so those below them dont want to be left out and also join the chopping even to provide simple government services. People buy big cars and build big mansions to show off and not because they need it or can afford it and then complain electricity and petrol is too expensive. At the same time people dont know how to use money wisely and continue spending a lot on unnecessary things like changing fake hair every few days when real hair is already growing on your head, buying and wasting mobile data, using multiple phones, and using it for non productive things. With this mentality as a country and in this scenario 9% will always be considered too little and no amount will be enough.
