As for Joe Jackson de3 the least said about him the better. Let's wait and see how long it stays at 12 Ghs. I spoke to one abokyi, he said by December de3 kwatakwata 18 Ghs to the dollar.

The Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana should have set a realistic and pragmatic goal to start with. Having done the budget and other projections for most of the year, it would have made more sense to attempt to stabilize GHS:$ at 13 instead of the artificial intervention rate which saw GHS appreciate so fast (rapidly) to about 9.90 instead a very short period. I was in Ghana this year for 3 weeks from mid May to first week of June, within which GHS appreciated from 14.5 to 9.90 which was not sustainable. Even the CEO of Cocoa Board was lamenting about this and no one cared, simply because of political window dressing. Now, it has become obvious that Ghana does not have limitless $ to continue to intervene. There’s a lot of smuggling of hard currencies and gold to countries such as Turkey, United Arab Emirates, India and China. This can be curbed simply by monitoring the travel itineraries of certain four particular airlines (names withheld) but which are not European or American based airlines. These currencies and gold are smuggled out with the complicity of government officials.

It seems the only thing remaining for the NPP folks to gloat over is any seemingly weaknesses of the NDC government. What they don't seem to appreciate is if the government so desires they can further bring the dollar down but it'll hurt exporters (including cocoa etc sectors). A typical example is the Blue Skies Ltd near Nsawam. The rise of the Cedi has so affected their incmes that they had wanted to layoff workers but for the strategic action of the government to let the Cedi slide to help exporters recover. What is undeniable is the government is on top of issues.

Kwaku, nobody is gloating, dumping dollars into the economy to bring down the cedi/$ rate is not rocket science especially when you did not accumulate the forex, the NPP government could have done that and won the election or at the very least reduce the margin of defeat but would that have been responsible? Propaganda usually end up eating its practitioners, the dollar dumping was not sustainable and sensible economic policy.
