The Technical Advisor to the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Elsie Appau-Klu, has highlighted the Authority’s ongoing efforts to expand Ghana’s tax net, particularly within the informal sector.

Speaking as part of a delegation visiting Finland on behalf of the Commissioner-General, Anthony Sarpong, Appau-Klu outlined the progress made under GRA’s new tax reforms aimed at broadening the tax base and promoting voluntary compliance.

“I joined the High-Level Visit on Tax Administration and Digitalisation to Helsinki, Finland. This study visit is designed to strengthen African tax administration capabilities through executive-level knowledge exchange and practical insights for efficient taxation, which will promote sustainable development and economic resilience across African nations,” she said.

Appau-Klu stressed the importance of citizen participation in taxation, noting that sustainable tax education programmes are being rolled out to ensure taxpayers understand simplified processes, accountability measures, and their role in national development.

“Under the leadership of our Commissioner-General, Anthony Sarpong, the GRA will implement a sustainable tax education and citizen engagement programme to continuously inform taxpayers about simplified taxation processes and accountability measures to ensure effective service delivery,” she added.

She further explained that the GRA is drawing inspiration from Finland’s model of a “happy taxpayer society,” describing it as an important tool in aligning with President John Dramani Mahama’s resetting agenda.

“Revenue mobilisation is a tool for self-reliance, sustainable development, and growth,” Appau-Klu affirmed.
