The last time I checked, the 12 dollars (almost) Ghanaweb, or the BoG, is quoting here is still well below the 17 dollars the current government inherited from your nation-wrecking party - if they (the NPP) were the ones still in charge now we would most probably be talking of around 20 - 25 dollars. The NPP have never dragged the rate below what they inherited it - they only continued from where they inherited it. The best they can do is stabilise it for a while at where they meet it.

Don't you think your statement is premature? The rate you quoted is based on the administration's artificial propping up of the cedi, not on a rate that is commensurate with the economy's fundamentals. What did the Mahama administration do to bring down the rate from 15 to 9.5 in three months? Nothing besides the artificial mechanism I mentioned earlier. I suspect the rate will be 13 to 14 cedis to the dollar by year's end, perhaps even higher.

THE CEDI FAKE PERFORMANCE IS BACK TO SQUARE ONE.
GHANA'S LAZY CROOKED EASY-MONEY-GRABBING LEADERS SIMPLY DO NOT HAVE THE ECONOMIC FUNDAMENTALS COMMONSENSE IN PTHEIR BLOATED HEADS TO SUSTAIN THE CEDI APPRECIATION AGAINST THE GLOBAL CONVERTIBLE TRADING CURRENCIES.
THERE'S NO FREE LUNCH ANYWHERE! THIS WILL BE ANOTHER LOAN HEAPED ON BANKRUPTED NON-CONNECTED GHANAIANS TO COUGH OUT IN KILLER TAXES.
THIS IS YET ANOTHER LOAN TO BE DUMPED ON ALREADY BANKRUPTED POOR GHANAIANS.
THE FUNDS FOR INCREASING RICE YIELDS IN GHANA WHERE WHAT KUFUOR, HIS FAMILY MEMBERS AND HIS APPOINTEES LOOTED, AND THAT LOOTING SPREE WAS PERFECTED BY AKUFO-ADDO, HIS FAMILY AND HIS APPOINTEES IN GRAND STYLE.
THESE TWO INDIVIDUALS (AKUFO-ADDO AND KUFUOR) MUST BE ARRESTED BY ORAL, OSP, AG, BNI, ETC TO COUGH OUT THE BILLIONS OF US DOLLARS THEY LOOTED FROM GHANA'S TREASURY TO RAISE THE MUCH-NEEDED FUNDING FOR RICE PRODUCTION IN MOTHER GHANA.
TO THIS DAY, GHANA IS STILL BEING BLED BY THE VERY GHANAIAN LEADERS WHO SHOULD BE PROTECTING THE PUBLIC PURSE.

Thank u ziggy Lala..u are a true patriotic citizen..u hit the nail..how could u make all this gains with the cedi to dollar and loose it all at once..the fact is both Npp and Ndc don’t know anything about governance..if we continue with this Npp/ndc because of tribalism, this country will never progress..it’s about time we got to switch and eliminate these two parties..that’s the only way out...I have sat down and done my own analysis and regardless of who will come being it Npp/ndc, the value will always be the same..When I was at the university, one professor once told me u can’t do same things over and over and expect different results..Hassan Ayariga and cheddar are the only two candidates I believe in..tribalism will not allow Ghanaians to make a change but these politicians like power and if we the people don’t force them out, they will never get out of politics..it’s about time we try something different..

Your name kusie sounds like a dumb person..because no sensible person will name himself after kusie..so u mean because of 4million Ghanaians abroad, so the remaining 35 million people in Ghana should suffer because of remittances..when people bring up the issue of traders not reducing their goods and services, it just sound dumb to me..As a govt, u hold the responsibility to make sure people go by fair pricing..that’s the reason why we have rent control, price control etc..all these agencies are there to make sure people are not being cheated..so basically what h are saying means those govt agencies are not doing their jobs..and u talking about remittances, how about those Ghanaians who don’t have e family members abroad to send them money, so they should suffer in hunger just because they don’t receive remittances? That’s the reason why when persuasion fails, force must be applied..

BOG is always behind the curve in resolving the depreciation of the Cedi, very reactive, confusing the market, always playing catch up and talking, and talking, all to no avail. Gold prices are at their highest in the world market, so what the hell is going on with the Cedi depreciation now? The answer is simple, sell more gold to prop up the Cedi, while you work hard behind the scene to resolve the Cedi depreciating, or else nothing will work, it is that simple. BOG can read the data to us, change every law regarding forex, stand at Kotoka Airport to seize people's US Dollars, etc, all this will not work, people will hoard the Dollar in their homes if the sentiment is that the Cedi is now depreciating, this method is a business for most Ghanaians.

Bro u made some valid points but honestly the govt is not serious..u said something about the govt selling more gold to prop up the cedi which in a way is true but now people are not selling their gold too..when the goldbod was set up, I made a comment here on Ghanaweb that without a competitive market prices for the local gold dealers and miners , gold buyers and sellers will not sell their gold to the govt..typical example a pound of gold on the world market is 14,000 cedis but goldbod is buying a pound of gold for 8,000 cedis..so the govt think the gold dealers are stupid to sell their gold for a cheap price knowing very well the world price of gold for a pound is 14,000 cedis..without a competitive market prices for gold, people will equally hoard their gold just as they hoard the dollar..secondly all hose useless black markets needs to be clamped down..I don’t see why something is illegal yet it’s still operational..they are part of the problem..those black market men hoard most of the dollars in the system and sell them at a higher rate..if I was in Govt, I will read comments no matter how harsh it may be, some of the comments are good for you as a govt..that’s what most developed countries do..

Good question.
The answer is that, it cannot be stable because dollars will always be in demand. And the government always resort to artificially dragging the exchange rate down aggressively, which ends up going back up after a few months. These constant up and down movements is terrible for businesses. It would have been better for the NDC government to stabilize it around 14 cedis with the billions of dollars, instead of throwing it all in at once to drag it down aggressively.

So many Ghanaians are gullible and have allowed politicians to insult your intelligence. The cedi can never appreciate against the dollar for 6,8,10 or 12 months consecutively. The reason being that the country's imports far exceeding exports but our politicians are not creating factories to boost export. The more you export to get the much needed foreign currency, the more the local currency stabilises. The cedi will appreciate but it's superficial and its sustainability is short lived. If a country imports more than half of basic food for its citizens then the local currency will continue to depreciate. This is what our politicians have failed to do and not doing anything to reverse the trend. I was happy when the previous gov't came out with 1D1F policy.
