The reliance on imported used clothing (often called "Obroni Wawu") is not a sustainable or dignified solution for Ghana’s textile and fashion industry. Here’s why:
1. Economic Drain– Billions of dollars flow out of Africa to foreign secondhand clothing dealers, instead of supporting local tailors, designers, and textile manufacturers.
2. Poor Quality & Dignity – Used clothes are often low-grade, torn, or stained, reinforcing a perception of dependency rather than innovation.
3. Kills Local Industry– Cheap secondhand imports undercut Ghanaian-made fabrics (like Kente, GTP, and Woodin), discouraging investment in local production.
4. Environmental Harm– Fast-fashion waste from the West ends up in landfills, contributing to pollution. Ghana should lead in sustainable African fashion, not be a dumping ground.
5. Lost Jobs & Creativity – A thriving local fashion industry could create thousands of jobs in design, manufacturing, and retail—boosting the economy.

Why don't you call for a worldwide demonstration? You people are not serious? Stop threatening this government with misplaced demonstrations just because of your parochial political interest. The government would not allow itself to be pushed around. Go on demonstration and let's see who it will affect most.

Just impose heavy tariffs on imported used clothing, and use the proceeds to subsidize local textile and garment industries.
