Indeed, taxes are essential for the growth and development of any government, as they provide the revenue needed to fund infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other critical services. However, it is equally important that taxes are structured to be reasonable and not impose undue burdens on citizens. A balanced approach ensures that while the government generates necessary revenue, the well-being and financial stability of its people are not compromised.

And you couldn't find out from your analysis that taxes like e-levy is stifling consumer spending and rather collapsing small businesses which employs the majority of Ghanaians. When e-levy is removed, people will find the reason and the fiscal space to spend on goods and services offered by small businesses. Small Businesses will thrive and government can then tax small businesses for its revenue. E-levy is the most unreasonable tax in the country in that you can tax somebody for using his own money, which may have already been taxes severally elsewhere. Betting tax, I don't have a problem if it is maintained, but e-levy should definitely go.

Are those taxes so crucial for the government whilst we are paying SML and KelniGVG millions of dollars monthly for doing no work. When we could pay $108million to the president's daughter to buy spare parts for 307 ambulances? There are numerous payouts monthly and in huge figures for no work done. All create, loot and share schemes. We don't need betting tax and e-levy to survive but for the create, loot and share of the npp. JM can cancel those taxes by stopping those corrupt payments.

A very good question from Joe Jackson to the Former President and the now in coming President Mahama, if they have the will power to remove all those taxes, he (or is it they) have said they would remove, where will revenue come from for the government to implement all the policies they plan to do? All that plenty talk was just to sway the vote of the citizen to his side.
If anything at all, this new government will come in and boastfully remove all those taxes and get a close to hundred present approval rate from most of the citizens. Not too long after the government would realise that there is not enough revenue coming into the state coffers to enable government implement those promises they to made to the people of Ghana. The government now has the option to borrow from internal operations (which is not enough), or borrow from international financial institutions; this option comes with huge cost which will end up draining the countries revenue. The easy way out of this quagmire is to bring those taxes back with a new name and may end up increasing the rates so they would have more cash to implement their ambitious policies.
Just mark my words.

Overtaxation of citizens does not equate to a rich government. Ghana recently discovered oil after years without it, what has the oil wealth contributed to the bottom line of the country’s economy? Good policies in resource management is where the money will come from. Private citizens can hold onto their monies and gambling winnings. Government makes policy to ensure money circulates within the system preventing siphoning it outside! The same way we do for cocoa. Reduce incentives for money going outside of Ghana as compared to coming in. E.g. Tax persons or companies exchanging their cedis into other currencies at 30% and tax exports of resources and services going outside NOT COMING INSIDE. use gold negotiation such as in gold for oil scheme etc. There are better ways and our economist can work it out. Let’s work together both NPP and NDC and any other party for Ghana sake.

These wicked Oldmen are back with their supposed 'wise counsel'. Even USA president elect has set up DOGE ( Department of Government Efficiency). We the youth are saying the overpriced contracts and Government procurement has to stop. If not, there will eventually be a Cote' D'Ivoire in Ghana to purge the conscience of our political class. Ghana and Ivory coast have similar topology. Yet Ghana road construction is always 5x the cost for a similar road in Ivory Coast. Go and see how Ivory Coast is peaceful and quiet after the civil war.

Why should we borrow money to feed students?
Who was asking for food for SHS people before NPP came to power?
There was student loan trust fund for tertiary students. Why allowances again?
We're doing what the western countries aren't doing(free things), yet we're borrowing from them and also begging for aid.

Honestly speaking I think we need to be discerning enough to reckon that the electoral promises of removing so called "nuisance taxes" didn't start with John Mahama and his ndc. The npp before 2016 made those promises, actually fulfilled those promises by removing those taxes. But what did we see the npp later imposed taxes that were even nuisance that those they removed. So I think as Ghanaians we need to come to terms with the fact that both ndc and npp are not better. They're using us for business because it is evidenced that by the time any of these parties are leaving the corridors of power they would done irreparable damage to the national purse. So I think it's about time we wise up and look for a much alternative in future.

After reading most of the comments, Naka is the only one who talked sense.
Guys put your political party lenses down and face the facts.
The majority of ghanaians don't pay direct taxes, yet they are the ones who complain the most. We all know there are leakages in the government and these need to stop. Corruption is drowning us, the next govt will do the same. It's been an uphill battle fighting corruption in this country.
Our leaders are the reflection of our society, most of us are as greedy as the politicians there. We see it in our day to day lives in this country. We like to pretend like we are good but it's a facade. I know there are good people in this country but the bad ones outnumber them. When the next government takes office next year, we'll start hearing of corruption cases within year 2. This will be same people that are criticizing this current government.
And also what's up with going to the houses of government officials to ask for money? How much do you think they are paid? What happens is; the person has to be corrupt in order for the fulfillment those duties
If we don't change our behavior, whoever comes to power will take advantage of us.

Every country where betting takes place, taxes are out in it. You people don't get it,Mahama was just talking desperately for votes. He won't remove betting tax. Even that akukonkitinkiti, wellington boots, aboboya nonsense was just talking for gullible mins in ndc to think he has a super plan. Lol! The 24 hr economy was another nonsense since we are not an industralized nation like UK,America etc. Do you expect market women and container shop owners who are the main businesses in Ghana to open 24hrs cos mahama said so? Even most of them sell imported goods,so if they are forced to sell 24 hrs and Ghanaians are forced to wake up from sleep to go buy items between midnight and 5 am,the economy will collapse because there'll be increased imports into the country for these people to sell. Everyone knows Mahama is coming to plunge Ghana to worse state kraa. He didn't win any election. Ghanaians, including many npp& swing voters just refused to vote, whilst visionless ndc followers went to vote cos all they care about is seeing the umbrella and their colors over Ghana. When things start getting worse, you will see how dead quiet they'll be and even deny they were the ones who voted . Can't you see that with rumours flying around about the fate of free shs,the faces of Ghanaians are looking grim wherever you go cos now they realized the doom we are heading towards & are afraid. Too late. Those who's hearts are genuinely right for ghaa and are patriotic not partisan,God will help them keep afloat till elections in 2028. In God we trust

Joe Jackson seems to have forgotten that toll booths were once ubiquitous in our country, generating significant revenue. However, the NPP Government dismantled this system and introduced betting tax and e-levy instead. The reasoning behind this move appears to be that the youth of our country benefit more from betting. Moreover, when withdrawing mobile money, an additional tax in the form of e-levy is imposed. It's worth noting, Joe Jackson, that removing betting tax and e-levy could potentially lead to the reinstatement of toll booths as a revenue-generating measure.
