If you buy a salvage vehicle originating from the US you can check the vehicle history from CARFAX or just simply google the vin number. You may even see pictures/video of the damaged salvage vehicle before auction sales. The problem is some of these Ghanaian salvage dealers buy condemned cheaper vehicles with certificate of destruction meant for parts at junk yards instead of cars with salvage titles. Those condemned vehicles with extensive damages cannot be re-licensed and be put back on the road in US but could be shipped to Ghana, repaired, and put back on the road. If you know what you're doing a nice fender bender, easy fix salvage vehicle from the south(no rust) is the cheapest cars to buy.

First of all, i was talking about salvage vehicles not stolen cars. People do not steal stationary salvage vehicles. Yes, some stolen vehicles can slip through the system. But a proper investigation can sniff out any stolen/disguised vehicle. You can change the vin on the dashboard, but you also have vin numbers on the middle door post, engine and transmission. Red flag should go up if they have been filed off. In some vehicles like Toyota the last four digits of your vin number is the radio code, therefore, you can't get the radio to turn on with switched vin. The vin is also electronically assigned to the vehicle. Finally, if you do a CARFAX check and pay attention to details you know through some inconsistencies that cars may have been switched.

I know somebody who used a DV vehicle for more than 2 years while advertising it at the same initial price. I was put off completely. I won't even go near a Ghana used car even if it's marketed as lady-driven.

Warped advice . The many home used cars you and many of us bring into this country are also salvaged . They all had issues but we bought and solved those issues and used them. Not everyone sells their car because it is issues. Some people sell because they just don’t need or desire the car anymore . I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla I will be putting up for sale in the next few months only because I feel I’ve outgrown it and want a “bigger car”; not because I’m hiding any problem

It's the same issue everywhere in the world when it comes to selling a used car. The reasons why people sell their cars are the same everywhere: because of persistent problems, not ready to own a car anymore, to get a new one, or any one of numerous other reasons. If you talk about poor maintenance culture in Ghana that's understandable. But the reason she gives doesn't hold at all.

If Ghana-used cars are not considered good for purchase, then home-used cars sold by dealers in Ghana should also not be considered good. This is because many car dealers in Ghana use the cars they sell, clean them up, and then present them as home-used cars. For example, I know someone who has been driving a car with a DV plate for over two years and later plans to park it and sell it as a home-used vehicle. This practice is common in Ghana today. Given this, there is little difference between Ghana-used cars and so-called home-used cars. In both cases, the cars have been used under similar conditions before being sold.
