ECG is actually fleecing Ghanaians with everything they do. For instance take the new AUTOMATIC billing system they introduced just a year ago.

The ECG introduced a new ECG APP that allows customers access their bills on line. Their new billing system take meter readings regularly and consistently in the middle of the month, calculate an average reading from the middle of the previous month to the middle of the current month and use this average reading to estimate a so called "actual reading" from the beginning to the end of the current month to generate the bill for the current month, then do an "adjustment" for the overlap between the middle and end of the previous month. What is worrying is that they do not explain how they arrive at this adjustment figure, which gives good grounds to suspect foul play.

More worryingly, the new bills are accessible on the ECG site within the fist four days of their release, and they are taken down for ever. For that matter, after going through the bill, if customers take time to study it and detect any discrepancies, they cannot verify it.

Visiting the ECG district offices to seek any redress is a taboo, since the staff at the office do not take kindly to illiterate customers complaining about what modern computers had efficiently generated. If one is fortunate to gain audience from the customer support desks with an online complain ticket, the first response from the ECG would be a notice of closure of the ticket before the support personnel's unconvincing explanation about how there was need (actually, no need) to calculate the adjustment figures.

The ECG MD's unnecessary lecture on how the dollar exchange rate affects customer tariffs bears testimony to the above comments. Who is not aware that everything we do in Ghana is bound to the dollar? Our own governments' budgets have always been supplemented by dollar dole outs for as long as we remember! Even the air we breathe is affected by the dollar rate, because cold winds blow from the northern hemisphere and are warmed by the heat of the Sahara plains before they reach us. For that matter, we will soon start paying bills for the consumption of air, the MD seems to predict!

One day, customers are going to organize national demonstrations to all ECG district officers to demand accountability from staff for the fleecing the system at least opportunity!

The government told us not to price anything in dollars. But ECG is telling us that the prices are going up because it is priced with the dollar. Make this make sense. We live in Ghana and America.
