Well, it seems Bawumia was right after all; the exchange rate does indeed betray the fundamentals. From 2017 to 2019, when the economy was robust, the cedi was stable. In 2022, when the economy collapsed, the exchange rate exposed the NPP Government, as the cedi fell from six cedis to a dollar (6:1 to 15:1.) From February 2023 to January 2024, as the economy began to recover, the cedi strengthened aand now stands at 12:1. So, Bawumia was absolutely right. If you want to see how the fundamentals are faring, keep an eye on the exchange rate. It has been stable for 12 months now.
