Following the appreciation of the local currency against major trading currencies, especially the US dollar in recent times, many, including the trading community, have lauded President John Dramani Mahama for the Ghana cedi's gains.
In a video gone viral on social media, a woman, who appears to be a food vendor, heaped praises on President Mahama for the drop in prices of some food items, including cooking oil, bags of rice, and tubers of yam.
In the video sighted by GhanaWeb, the vendor reported that the cost of a gallon of cooking oil, once pegged at GH¢1,000, has now dropped to GH¢680. This signifies a GH¢320 reduction in price.
Similarly, a bag of rice that previously sold for GH¢500 now goes for GH¢380.
“Mahama is my saviour. Today, when I went to the market, this gallon of oil that I buy for GH¢1,000 was sold to me for GH¢680. This tuber of yam was also bought at GH¢40 despite the shortage of yam on the market... God bless you Mahama," the woman was heard saying while beaming with smiles.
Meanwhile, social media users have expressed mixed reactions to her claim. While some agree that food prices have dropped, others criticised her for attributing it to politics.
The cedi is trading at a buying price of GH¢13.09 and a selling price of GH¢13.10 to a dollar on the interbank market.
The British pound is being bought at GH¢17.42 and sold at GH¢17.44, while the euro trades at a buying price of GH¢14.74 and a selling price of GH¢14.75.
