Undersea cable cut: Repair work complete, internet services restored

MainOne, the provider of undersea fibre optic internet connectivity, has announced the completion of repair work on its damaged submarine cable, marking the end of an internet blackout that gripped Ghana and some West African countries in March.

The cable damage, which occurred on March 14, 2024, severely impacted internet, data, and Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services provided by telecommunication firms in Ghana.

MainOne, in a statement released on Friday, May 10, 2024, extended commendations to all stakeholders involved in resolving the issue.

“MainOne, an Equinix Company, is pleased to announce the conclusion of repairs to its submarine cable following an outage which occurred on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

“Working closely with regional partners, maintenance providers, vessel owners, and permitting authorities, MainOne completed the necessary repairs to its submarine cable system, thanks to the diligent efforts of all stakeholders, and has resumed regular operations with the utmost integrity of its submarine cable.

“During this period, MainOne provided restoration capacity and rerouted traffic on its network to minimize the impact on its customers,” part of the statement said.

Funke Opeke, Managing Director of MainOne, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of regional partners, maintenance providers, vessel owners, and permitting authorities.

She emphasized the diligent work that led to the completion of necessary repairs and the restoration of regular operations with the utmost integrity of the submarine cable.

“MainOne's resilience in the face of the recent outage demonstrates the company's commitment to its customers and the region's digital transformation,” the statement added.
