Mobitel pays $0.5m penalty

Millicom (Ghana) Limited, Mobitel has paid $500,000 in penalties to the National Communications Authority (NCA).

This followed the amicable resolution of the company?s problems with regard to its operations with the NCA. It has also made payments totaling ?1.3 billion in respect of regulatory fees for 2002 and 2001. The Minister of Communications and Technology, Mr Felix K. Owusu-Adjapong, disclosed these at the launch of Mobitel?s GSM Services in Accra, on Tuesday.

He gave the assurance that every encouragement would be extended to all investors to ensure that their investments were rewarding. Mr Owusu-Adjapong said that the state of the country?s telecommunication revealed a large pool of unsatisfied demand for the basic telephone service.

He said that the Ministry was committed to building a telecommunication infrastructure that would project the sector and country as the ICT centre on the west coast.
