ITAS will deliver more efficient tax administration - Anthony Sarpong

The Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, has assured taxpayers that the Authority will continue to leverage technology and innovation to improve tax administration and make compliance simpler and more efficient.

Speaking with the media on the sidelines of stakeholder engagement on the rollout of the Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS) on June 5, 2026, Sarpong said the new platform forms part of GRA's broader digital transformation agenda aimed at enhancing service delivery and improving the taxpayer experience.

"As GRA, we are using technology and innovation to improve our tax administration experience for taxpayers, and therefore, in today's world, we believe that ITAS is the appropriate technology we have to use," he said.

According to him, technology continues to evolve, making it necessary for institutions to periodically upgrade their systems to meet changing demands and expectations.

He noted that the Authority had operated its previous tax administration platform, known as GIFMIS, for more than five years and had determined that it was time to introduce a new system capable of delivering greater efficiency and integration.

"We believe that it is about time to introduce a new system that will ensure that we continue improving the experience for taxpayers," Sarpong stated.

He explained that ITAS is expected to serve as the Authority's medium-term technology platform, particularly as the GRA seeks to integrate its operations with other government systems to improve compliance and service delivery.

The Commissioner-General, however, acknowledged that technology transitions can sometimes create temporary disruptions for businesses and taxpayers as they adapt to new processes.

"I want to assure taxpayers that changing technology sometimes leads to disruptions because people have to learn new systems," he said.

Sarpong stressed that the Authority does not intend to frequently replace the new platform in the short term, noting that stability remains important for businesses and taxpayers.

"We do not intend that with this technology we will replace it within a year or two because of another innovation," he said.

He added, however, that the GRA would continue to monitor developments in technology and embrace future innovations where necessary to improve service delivery.

"As we move into the future and new technologies emerge, we will embrace them and ensure that we keep focus on ensuring the systems we have continue to be efficient, simpler, and provide a better experience for taxpayers so that they can seamlessly fulfil their tax obligations," Sarpong stated.

The ITAS platform is expected to streamline tax administration processes, improve compliance, and strengthen interactions between the GRA and taxpayers as part of ongoing efforts to modernise Ghana's tax system.
