Private legal practitioner Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers has called on the government to amend the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission Act, 2007 (Act 737), to reflect the new policy direction.

His comments follow remarks by President John Dramani Mahama during an engagement with organised labour, where he indicated plans to establish a new independent emoluments commission to regulate public sector wages and salaries.

Speaking on GBC’s Current Agenda on March 21, 2026, Brako-Powers argued that there is no need to create a new commission if the existing Fair Wages and Salaries Commission can be strengthened to perform the same functions.

“If we want to restructure the public sector compensation architecture, we don’t need to set up a new independent emoluments commission. What the new commission will do, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission can do the same,” he said.

He also addressed the issue of affordable housing, stating that the government is partly responsible for challenges within the rental housing sector.
