Government has unveiled additional measures to combat illegal small-scale mining, intensifying its nationwide “Operation Halt” initiative.
Led by the Ghana Armed Forces, this operation aims to safeguard river bodies from destructive galamsey activities that have severely impacted the environment, particularly water resources.
In a statement released on October 9, 2024, the Ministry of Information outlined plans to collaborate with the Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana for a more coordinated approach.
Minister of Information Fatimatu Abubakar reaffirmed the government’s stance that river bodies and forest reserves are off-limits for mining, designating these areas as “red zones” subject to strict enforcement.
The government remains committed to eradicating illegal small-scale mining and urges all stakeholders to join the fight.
This renewed effort follows concerns over the devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana’s environment, including polluted rivers and destroyed forests.
