Water tariffs would be reduced drastically in the country if the fight against galamsey by the current government is sustained, Head of Communications at the Ghana Water Company Limited Stanley Martey has said.

According to him, if galamsey is eradicated entirely, the quality of water in the country would improve. This means there will be more water in the system that would benefit Ghanaians enormously as the use of chemicals would be less which will result in the reduced cost of production and tariffs.

“When galamsey is stopped and there is improvement, we can treat enough water for the people to consume; we can treat enough water with less chemicals which also means that the cost of production will reduce. It would have a positive impact on our tariffs which all of us as a nation would benefit from. Because when the tariffs are reduced we all will benefit. So let us look at all these things in totality and then make some informed decisions on whether to continue with alluvial mining or to stop it”, Mr Martey said.

He further stated that Ghanaians must all join in the fight against illegal mining to save cost and safeguard the economy, if not the entire nation will suffer from their operations.

Mr. Martey also stated that the recent fight against galamsey has yielded positive results for quality water production in the country. According to him, Ghana Water Company Limited has seen great improvement in its water production and supply following the campaign against it.

He also commended the government and the media for pursuing the fight against galamsey operations in the country and hopes it gets eradicated entirely so Ghanaians can enjoy the benefits of the resources in the country.
