Climate action needs inclusive and long-term strategy – Seidu Issifu tells stakeholders

The Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Seidu Issifu, has emphasised the need for proper collaboration and increased funding to support climate initiatives across sector ministries.

According to him, there is an urgent need for coordinated efforts and better integration of climate considerations into all aspects of government planning and implementation.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement on Friday, May 30, 2025, Issifu underscored the importance of understanding ongoing activities within sector ministries to ensure funding inflows are justified, scaled, and used efficiently.

“How do we collaborate? How do we scale up funding? How do we mobilise more resources to support sector ministers and the initiatives coming from agencies and authorities? That is the purpose of this meeting. Because at the end of the day, we should be able to account for some of these inflows. We should be able to scale them up,” he stated.

The minister, however, expressed concern over the lack of progress in the sector, criticising what he described as a "firefighting approach" to dealing with climate challenges.

He stressed the need to move beyond short-term fixes and ensure that vulnerable communities are fully integrated into the planning and implementation of climate solutions.

“If you come up with an initiative and the people who are worst affected are not integrated into it, in the long run, you will not be seen to be doing anything. So, from where I sit, we say we're building resilience, we're mitigating, we're adapting, but we take one step forward and two steps backward. We are not making progress,” he warned.

He further called for a shift toward building resilience in a more structured and inclusive manner to enable the government to present a unified front in addressing climate-related issues.

“Whatever we do, the climate dimension must be integrated into our sector ministries. Climate change has come to stay, we cannot ignore it. This meeting is meant to support your work and strengthen your efforts. It will also provide an opportunity to gather a comprehensive understanding of the challenges you face,” he added.
