The value of cheques used in Ghana increased in June 2026, even though fewer people and businesses issued cheques compared with the previous year.
According to the Bank of Ghana’s latest Payment Systems data, cheques worth GH¢35.7 billion were cleared in June 2026, representing an 8.5 per cent increase from the GH¢32.9 billion recorded in June 2025.
However, the number of cheques processed declined from 414,000 to 406,000 during the same period. This means fewer cheques were used, but the amounts involved were significantly higher.

The figures suggest that cheques are increasingly being used for large-value payments by businesses, government institutions and other organisations, while many individuals have shifted to digital payment methods such as mobile money and bank transfers.
Mobile money remains the most popular payment method for everyday transactions. In June alone, mobile money recorded 954 million transactions worth GH¢492.9 billion.
The trend does not necessarily mean cheques are disappearing. Instead, cheques appear to be increasingly used for larger transactions where formal records and established banking processes are important.

The value of cheques cleared also increased from GH¢33.8 billion in May 2026 to GH¢35.7 billion in June 2026, indicating a recovery in cheque usage.
The data suggests that while digital payments continue to drive everyday transactions, cheques still play an important role in major business and institutional payments.
