The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has called on Ghanaians to prioritise tax compliance, stressing that leadership must be demonstrated through action.
In a post shared on social media on April 30, 2026, the Minister disclosed that he and his deputy had publicly filed their annual tax returns, describing the move as a commitment to accountability and good governance.
“Earlier today, my Deputy and I publicly filed our annual tax returns. We did so for a simple reason: leadership must be demonstrated, not declared,” he stated.
Dr Forson commended Ghanaian taxpayers for their continued contributions to national development, noting that their compliance remains critical to the functioning of the state.
“I want to congratulate the Ghanaian taxpayer for the consistent effort over the years in supporting government and contributing to national development. Your compliance sustains the state and makes progress possible,” he said.
He emphasised that paying taxes is a shared civic duty, adding that all citizens and institutions must adhere to the law.
“Public officials, professionals, businesses, and citizens are all equal before the law, and we must all comply,” he noted.
The Finance Minister further described tax compliance not only as a legal requirement but also a moral obligation necessary for equitable national development.
“Compliance is not just a legal obligation. It is a moral responsibility. When each of us pays our fair share, the burden is distributed more equitably and development is accelerated,” he said.
He highlighted the importance of tax revenue in funding essential public services, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and security.
Dr Forson also commended the Ghana Revenue Authority for its efforts, particularly during the ongoing Tax and Good Governance Month in April.
“This initiative provides an important platform to educate, engage, and encourage voluntary compliance,” he said, urging the Authority to intensify public education and continue reforms to simplify tax processes and improve transparency.
“The Ministry of Finance stands ready to support the GRA in fully delivering on its mandate,” he added.
The Minister encouraged individuals and businesses yet to file their returns to do so promptly, advising them to seek assistance where necessary and make use of available digital platforms.
“To those who are yet to file, I encourage you to do so promptly… A strong tax culture strengthens economic stability, deepens accountability, and builds a fairer society,” he said.
He concluded by calling for collective responsibility in building a transparent and resilient economy.
“Let us work together, through compliance and integrity, to build a more transparent, resilient, and prosperous Ghana,” he stated.
