Dah wins Kickboxing’s WKF/WKBC Lightweight belt

Ghanaian kickboxer, Gerald Kojo Dah is back in the country preparing for his next fight in Thailand in March after claiming a world title in Hong Kong on January 7, Sportinghana.com reports.

The Powerzone Kickboxing Club trainee defeated home favourite, Monkey Wong via a unanimous decision verdict in their WKBC (63 kg) Lightweight fight right at the beginning of the new year. Dah who also beat another home boy, Christof Magzer on unanimous decision after a 10-round contest last June in Austria for the intercontinental championship, has expressed his determination to win more laurels in his quest to become one of the best kickboxers in the world.

“It was a great experience winning the WKBC belt but it’s just the beginning because I know I can become far better. I’m preparing for the Thailand fight, I have the talent and experience so it’s only improvement we are working on,” said Dah who is currently rated 4th in his category in the WKF rankings.

The kickboxer is however sad that the sport can’t get any support as does other sporting disciplines in the country. According to Dah, the situation is so bad that head coach of Powerzone Gym, George Amoah for instance couldn’t make the trip with the fighter to Hong Kong simply because of a lack of funds. In the end, Gerald Dah had to show up for the bout without his trainer, falling on the technical intervention of Powerzone assistant coach and Light Heavyweight kickboxer, Lawrence Nyanyo Nmai who was also on the trip to fight.

Nevertheless, they churned out the win but Dah believes Ghanaians can do a whole lot to help promote and develop kickboxing to rival football, boxing and other sports.

“We are doing well for Ghana, Powerzone Kickboxing Club we have made Ghana proud at big tournaments and we promise to do even more,” Dah told www.sportsinghana.com.

The WKBC Lightweight champion added a plea: “All we can ask from government and all the big companies is to motivate kickboxing in Ghana. They should encourage us and they will find out that we are the best in Africa and can even go to the world level.”
