Richard Commey to face Matthews for Commonwealth title

The Commonwealth Boxing Council have announced that its lightweight champion ‘Dirty’ Derry Mathews (34-8-2) will face mandatory challenger, Ghanaian Richard ‘Azonto’ Commey (16-0) at the Echo Arena, Liverpool on March 7th next year.

The purse bids were won by Queensberry Promotions, which recently announced a deal with Mathews. The Liverpudlian takes on Stephen Ormond for the WBO European title on December 7.

Commey is a dangerous opponent with a 100 per cent stoppage record (16-0, 16 KOs). He has appeared in the UK three times, disposing of Kris Hughes in 2012 and Paul Truscott in July this year.

The CBC have also announced that flyweight champion Kevin Stachell (11-0) will defend against his mandatory challenger, Ghanaian Isaac Quaye (25-4-1) on the same bill. Quaye has challenged for the title before, losing by unanimous decision to Don Broadhurst back in 2008.
