Regional boxing association organises tournament

Kumasi, Feb 3, GNA - The National Sports Council (NSC) in conjunction with the Ashanti Regional Boxing Association on Saturday organised an amateur boxing contest and professional exhibition bouts to whip up boxing enthusiasm among the youth in the region.

The tournaments featuringed six bouts in four divisions was between the Asawase Community Centre Boxing Club and Stadium Boxing Club and staged at the Kumasi Sports stadium.

In the lightweight division, Fulla Mba of Asawase scored a second round technical knockout win over Zakari Bayelma of Stadium club. Nicholas Sampando of Asawase club scored a unanimous points win over Yaw Sakyi of Stadium club while veteran Stephen Anafo of Stadium club also scored a unanimous points win over Mohammed Azigizah of Asawase in the same division.

In the welterweight fray, Sebeck Atinga of Asawase won a first round technical knockout win over Yahaya Mohammed of Stadium Club. In the professional exhibition bouts, Samuel Awombila of Stadium club and a former member of the Black Bombers now turned professional, split the points with Baba "Whitaker" Clay also of the same club in their catch-weight contest.

The exhibition fight which was the toast of the fans, saw Whitaker opening two deep cuts on both eyes of Awombila in the early rounds but who managed to come back strongly in the last three rounds of the six round contest to split the points with Whitaker.

In the same division, Baba Anafo and Alhassan "Cobra" Danjumah both of Stadium club also drew in their six rounds exhibition fight
