“Night of Future Boxing Champions” at Accra Arts Center …on Friday March 28, 2014

The Arts Center in Accra will be the action spot on Friday March 28, 2014 as the African Golden Gloves Warrior introduces the “Night of Future Champions” under the management of Dade Boxing Promotions headed by Mr. Gideon Quarteyna.

At a press conference to launch the activities of the African Golden Gloves Warrior (AGGW) new vision, the African Warrior Championships, Gideon Quartey, a keen amateur boxing enthusiast who has organized over 100 matches and wants the nation to produce experienced amateurs and reliable professional boxers said he is elated because one of his dreams of creating an African sanctioning body in Ghana has been realized and would encourage Ghanaian and other African promoters to come on board to support African boxers.

He noted that the AGGW is a body for general boxing and are involved in both amateur and professional boxing.

“We are developing the structures that we need to create a firm foundation and we want all stake holders like the media, managers, promoters, seconds, coaches and boxers to benefit” he expressed.

Gideon Quartey noted some of the problems that are stumbling blocks for African boxing such as lack of education for the boxing public in terms of clinics and other programmes, proper contracts between managers / promoters and boxers and boxers moving from on gym to the other due to greed or want for better conditions.

He emphasized that AGGW is setting the pace now with boxing championships and competitions for Ghanaian boxers and soon there would be National Golden Gloves Warrior Championships and Tournaments to help gyms and boxers in readiness for other national and international programmes.

Three titles are at stake in tonight’s event with former Olympian and SWAG award winner Duke Micah with 11 fights and no defeat taking on Ekow Wilson for the WBO Africa Bantamweight title belt.

Raymond Commey will face David Kotey for the African Golden Gloves Super Bantamweight title and Arday Dauda taking on Richard Dogbegah in a Super Lightweight contest.

Kpakpo Allotey will square up with John Akrugu, then Maxwell Amponsah, another durable amateur who has turned professional take on George Benson in a Lightheavyweight bout.

Abraham Afful will also fight Charles Tetteh in a Welterweight contest.

The fixed rate for the event is 10ghc and it is expected that the former amateur boxers would exhibit their skills.

Nii Hanson, First Vice President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) who launched the AGGW event expressed his joy that boxing is alive in Ghana and prayed that more promotions could be organized to keep boxers in shape throughout the year and advised the youth in Accra, especially James Town and Bukom to train hard to come and replace the former Ghanaian world champions.
