McIntosh for world title fight in China

Accra, April 24, GNA - The West Africa Super Lightweight boxing champion, Peter McIntosh is scheduled to fight for the World Professional Boxing Federation title in June this year.

The Ghanaian-resident Nigerian boxer has been short-listed to fight a yet to be named opponent for the title in China.

Speaking to the GNA Sports in Accra on Wednesday, McIntosh said this is going to be his breakthrough in the noble art of self defence after several years in the dark.

"I have waited for too long for a world title and will surely go for it."

Even though the boxer's opponent remains unknown, the 47-year old boxer gave the assurance that he is psychologically and physically ready for the challenge.

McIntosh has defied talks of his old age, insisting that he has two more years in the sport and maintains that discipline was his hallmark. "I don't intend to continue with boxing after 49 years."

The veteran pugilist who was recently decorated as the "Best of the Best" boxer in his homeland by the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBBC), said the award has pepped him up for more laurels.

McIntosh said the award was in recognition of his continued performance over the years, contrary to views by a section of the public that he is not a good boxer.

The award, a belt, was donated and sponsored by Alhaji Ibrahim Waziri, Founder and Life Patron of the Brotherhood Club of Nigeria.
