Greater Accra boxing team excel at regional tournament

Sunyani, (B/A) June 16, GNA - The Greater Accra regional boxing team put up a highly impressed performance to annex seven gold medals in the just-ended Inter-Regional amateur boxing tournament which took place at Sunyani, the Brong Ahafo regional capital The boxers secured the gold medals in the Bantamweight, Featherweight, Light heavyweight, Light-welterweight, Welterweight, Middleweight and Heavy weights. The boxers who chalked the success were Raphael Mensah, Isaac Sackey, Micheal Offei Dodoo, Ben Lamptey, Ebenezer Sowah, Charles Azuma and Maxwell Amponsah.

Jessie Lartey from the Eastern region took the silver medal in the bantam weight division, whilst Mustapha Mbebasi from Upper West and Sampson Sulley from Western regions got bronze medals. Nana Yaw Ofori from the Eastern Region took the silver medal in feather weight division, Suliemana Mohammed from the Northern Region and Ernest Kuruga from Western Region also secured bronze medals whilst Nathaniel Nukpe from the Volta Region took the silver medal in light weight with Kwasi Seribour from Eastern and Anthony Amissah from Central Regions taken bronze medals.

In the light-welterweight competition, Kwadwo Yeboah from Brong-Ahafo Region got the silver medal with Moses Kaba of the Upper East Region and Kwesi Annobil of the Central Region won bronze medals with Vincent Okor from Volta Region taken the silver medal in welterweight. Atiso Commando and Paake Awe who represented Volta and Western Regions respectively won the bronze medals in welterweight with Pin Vincent from the Ashanti Region taking the silver medal in the Middleweight division. Abdul Majid Lawal from Eastern Region and Emmanuel Bowoweh of the Upper East Region took the bronze medals in the middleweight championship.

In the Light heavyweight category, Timothy Kumbono from Upper East Region won the gold medal with Awudu Tampo from Ashanti Region taking the silver medal while Stephen Mensah from Eastern Region and Fuseini Sadic from Northern Region secured bronze medals. Kofi Besse of Brong-Ahafo Region won the silver medal in the heavyweight division whilst Klinza Womwomke and Mohammed Issahako from the Upper East and Upper West Regions respectively took the bronze medals.

Mr Edward Wilson, Brong-Ahafo Regional Sports Development Officer in an interview with the GNA Sports described the tournament as an improvement to last year's tournament held at Winneba. He commended residents of the Region for their impressive turnout and the sense of enthusiasm demonstrated in making the event a success. Mr Wilson expressed optimism that the third edition of the tournament would see a high level of patronage and commended the participating boxers and regions for their level of discipline.
