Ghanaians battle for C'wealth crown today

Two Ghanaian boxers, Joshua Okine "Bukum Tsatsu" and Osumanu Yahaya will on Friday, Boxing Day battle for the vacant Commonwealth Welterweight title in a 12th round fight at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The bout, which is the second promotions of Jomus Promotion headed by former World Boxing Association (WBC) Ike Quartey would see the two world champions in the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) sparing up for the best welterweight title in the Commonwealth.

The fight, originally scheduled for the Bahamas was shifted to Ghana after the promoters' insisted that it would mount to denying the local fans of the two boxers the opportunity to watch their local idols in action.

Both boxers have very good fighting records. Yahaya has fought 20 times drawing four and losing only one while Okine also has an impressive fight record of 11 with only one defeat.

In an interview with GNA Sports in Accra on Wednesday, Yahaya who appeared very calm was full of praise of his opponent, calling him a good boxer who has shown his ability but was optimistic that come the end of the fight on Friday, his rich experience gathered from fights in Britain would be the deciding factor.
Okine was not that charitable to his opponent as he claimed Yahaya has not fought any fighter of his calibre and would be no match at all and asked boxing loving fans to come on time since the fight is not likely to go the stipulated distance.
There would be four other supporting bouts, which would include the contest for the vacant National Light Weight contest between Raymond "Emperor" Narh and Alex Brew.
The fight also promises to be very hot as both boxers posses enviable record with Narh winning all his eight fights seven by way of knock outs whilst Brew has fought nine times lost only once and had eight knock outs.
The main supporting bout would be a Commonwealth eliminator between Kpakpo Allotey of Ghana and Aziz Onkoye from Nigeria for the right to face the featherweight champion of the Commonwealth. The other two fights would see Philip Kotey facing Julius Obre in a 12 round fight for the vacant national welterweight crown whilst good old Simon Mchintosh spar it off with Simon Odoom who is re-launching his career in an eight round international light weight contest. Weigh in for the boxers would take place at the Mascot Hotel on Wednesday.
