GBA to facilitate championship fights

The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) would soon institute measures to play a more meaningful role in the organization of boxing on the African continent to ensure that Ghanaian boxers are well drilled before challenging for world titles.

Speaking in an interview with the GNA Sports in Accra, Mr Moses Foh-Amoaning, Vice Chairman of the GBA said the move is in line with the long term corporate plan of the GBA to ensure that the country produced more world champions.

He said boxing has not been vibrant on the continent to the satisfaction of the GBA, adding that "Ghanaian boxers who are continental champions are not given stiff challenges needed before they are thrust into the world stage, hence they always fall short."

Mr Foh-Amoaning said to make their plan for the continent see reality the GBA would host Annual General Congresses of the West Africa and the African Boxing Council in Accra to enable them to streamline things in line with Ghanaian objectives.

He said the GBA would not restrict its activities to the continent alone, as they would seek a greater say in the Commonwealth Boxing Council (CBC) by ensuring that more Ghanaian boxers are rated by the association, when she hosts the General Assembly of the CBC in October this year.

"When this is done, it would enable us to systematically move our boxer from the Mortein Boxing League, where all fresh boxers would start off before they are ranked to enable them to fight in challenge contests before challenging for national titles.

"From the national title, the boxers would then contest for the West African title then Africa and Commonwealth before fighting for the world crown which is always the ultimate."

He said when this is done and all the boxers go through the drill, the country would produce more world champions in the not too distant future.

Mr Foh-Amoaning said the GBA has put up a team of brilliant boxers called Team Ghana who have the potential of winning world tiles for the country but added that they need to be well guided for them to be properly drilled before they go for the ultimate.
