As he gears up to fight Abner Mares in the Don King fashioned Bantamweight Tournament decider come this Saturday April 23rd, Samir Captan, President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has sent a message of goodwill to IBF Bantamweight champion Joseph King Kong Agbeko on behalf of the GBA and Ghanaians.

Agbeko (28-2, 22 KOs) faces Mares (21-0-1, 13 KOs) in the Bantamweight Tournament Finals on Saturday night at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California and Ghanaian boxing chiefs have united in their unflinching support for the man called King Kong.

According to the message from the GBA President, Agbeko should be assured that although he will be in the ring alone, an entire nation are with him in spirit and every Ghanaian is praying for him to retain the title in the bout to be screened live to the nation courtesy Metro TV.

“We wish to encourage our boxer – Joseph Agbeko in the forthcoming fight to approach it with the same determination and purposefulness as he has done in the past to win the crown for himself and our dear nation,” stated Mr. Captan.

The GBA President added: “I also want to assure you that as you mount the ring to engage your opponent, all Ghanaians home and abroad are firmly behind you in prayers and in spirit. Fight hard to rekindle the national pride as you have done several times back.”

Agbeko currently remains Ghana’s only true world champion and though the 7,100-seat Nokia Theatre venue of the fight gives Mares, a Mexican national who grew up in Southern California, home turf advantage, the most powerful man in Ghana boxing believes the need to make Ghana proud should spur King Kong Agbeko to victory.

“Agbeko needs to make mother Ghana proud again by retaining the title. He should bear in mind that the title is a crown to wear, a cross to bear and the whole nation is with him in his quest to win more titles for himself and country,” Mr. Samir Captan signed off.
