GAABA rolls out dinner boxing championships

Accra, Jan. 16, GNA - The Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) will roll out dinner championships this season as part of efforts towards the development of boxing in the region. The contest to be staged at major hotels during their dinner events is geared towards promoting the activities of the Association to the clientele and other patrons. Gideon Quartey, Acting Chairman of GAABA who made this known at a media briefing on Friday, said plans are far advanced for the inaugural edition of the contest.

He said the Association is in discussions with two Nungua-based hotels who have so far expressed interest in the concept to host the event. Quartey also announced the introduction of a Memorial Championship and Golden Gloves championship as the other additions to the schedule of the Association for the season. The Memorial Championship, he said, is to honour past amateur boxers and administrators' while the Golden Gloves would serve as the platform to select the best from a pool including champions from some neighbouring countries.

The Acting chairman announced that registration for the fourth edition of the Amateur Boxing League will soon begin. Quartey therefore made an urgent appeal to corporate organizations and individuals for support towards the activities of the Association to relief it of some of the financial burden which has over the times been borne by the Executives single-handedly.
