Former Ghana Heavyweight champion laid to rest

Cape Coast, May 11, GNA - The mortal remains of the late Albert Arthur, alias Aldoray, former Ghana heavyweight boxing champion was on Saturday laid to rest at the Ekon cemetery near Cape Coast in the Central Region.

Aldoray, 64, a former Central Regional boxing coach died after a protracted illness at Cape Coast in March this year.

Among the sports dignitaries who attended the burial ceremony were Mr Beresford Amui, Central Regional Sports Development Officer, Mr Matthew Doe, Chairman of the Regional Football Association and Mr Twinto Weaker, Chairman of the Regional Ghana Amateur Boxing Association.

In a tribute, the National Sports Council said Aldoray was appointed by the Council as a boxing trainer in 1984 and worked hard to become the regional coach under the acting Chief Executive, Mr George B. Dasoberi. The tribute said over the years, Aldoray used his expertise and experience to train many formidable boxes such as the 'Hawk' Sam Akromah, former Commonwealth Featherweight champion, Dan Lawyer, former light heavyweight champion of the Black Bombers and Ato Daniels, former regional light welterweight champion among others. "And as we bid you farewell, we appreciate your hard work, your kindness and gentleness, as a person you had paid your due to the nation in general, the region in particular and your family as well as fulfilled your personal ambition when you became both national light heavyweight and heavy weight champion." Aldoray during his hey days defeated such strong boxers as Adama Mensa and Ekow Krani among others in both the national heavyweight and light heavyweight categories.
