Canadian Boxer Trains in Accra

Ty Cooke, a Canadian super middleweight boxer has joined the Believers Boxing Club in Accra to sharpen his skills preparatory to a serious challenge in the division.

The 19 year-old Canadian told GNA Sports that he decided to sharpen his skills in Ghana because of the popularity of the sport in the country and the quality of the local boxers.

Ty said he came into the country on a visit and after watching a few fights, decided to train here because "the boxers are solid performers" despite the lack of modern infrastructure and equipment.

He said Ghanaian boxers do not, however, respect the opposition as the fans' anxiety to see knockouts influence their pace and that could be dangerous if a boxer burns himself out early in a fight without succeeding in knocking out his opponent.

"In Canada, every boxer has respect for the other side and boxers bid their time, looking for a knockout and when the chance comes, they take it."

Ty said he has not yet made up his mind to fight in Ghana but would decide after a period of time.
