Black Bombers crash out of AIBA Championship

Accra, Oct. 3, GNA - Ghana's five members of the Black Bombers box= ing team have crashed out of the preliminary round of the 2011 International Boxing Association (AIBA) World Championship underway in Baku, Azerbaijan. The two remaining hopefuls Michael Amoo Bediako and Emmanuel Quarshie exited the global championships after suffering losses over the weekend. Information gathered by GNA Sports from Baku indicates that Light welterweight Amoo Bediako lost 5:29 to Koba Pkhakadze of Georgia in the 64-kg category whilst Middleweight Quarshie was disqualified in the second round of his bout in the 75-Kg division against Arbi Chakaev of Austria. The judges scored the bout in 31-0 in favour of the Austrian. Earlier, Duke Micah (Flyweight), Maxwell Amponsah (Heavyweight) and Norris Thompson (Welterweight) bid farewell to the competition after losses in their opening rounds.

The performance represents one of the nation's worst performance in the history of the biennial championship despite the fact that the Black Bomber= s have yet to win a medal at the championship.

The tournament, which comes to an end on October 10, is also a qualifier for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Over 500 boxers from 113 countries are competing for honours in the global championship.
