Association dissociates itself from Homowo run-off championship

Accra, Aug. 29, GNA - The Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) has dissociated itself from next month's Homowo run-off championship.

The championship is being organized by the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), the national boxing authority is to climax the annual Homowo Festival of the Chiefs and people of Ga Mashie. Gideon Quartey, Acting Chairman of GAABA told GNA Sports on Friday that his outfit would not be part of the September championship. "We have also cautioned all Gyms and boxers against participating in the event."

The Acting GAABA Chairman warned that any Gym or boxer that goes against the collective decision will be sanctioned and suspended indefinitely from the Association's future activities.

Quartey quizzed the motive behind the national body's decision to organize the championship when "they have done absolutely nothing towards the development of the sport in the country."

He said GABA has tuned a deaf ear to their appeals for support towards the organization of the Regional Amateur Boxing League, "but they now want to use our boxers after our months of toil." Quartey explained that his outfit successfully organized a Regional edition last week dubbed, "Homowo Individual Championship" without any form of support from the national body.

"We are now concentrating on our regional league and won't partake in any activity that will derail our progress," he added.
