Ashie for world title shot

Accra, May 2, GNA - Ghana's George Ashie will take on George Mchelishvili of Georgia for the vacant Universal Boxing Council (UBC) Super Featherweight title.

The fight, which is being put together by Ghacal Group Incorporated with support from the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), the National Sports Council (NSC) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, will be held at the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra on May 15. Information gathered by the GNA Sports from the secretariat of the GBA indicates that plans are far advanced to ensure the success of the championship.

Mohamed Amin Lamptey, Public Relations Officer of the GBA said his outfit is now seeking for corporate sponsorship to support the bout since the finances involved is enormous.

He therefore appealed to individuals and corporate bodies to come to the aid of the GBA to ensure a successful event since it will pave the way for other international bouts to be staged in the country. On the bill is a World Boxing Association (WBA) Pan Africa Middleweight Championship bout between Ghana's Lartekwei Hammond and Annicet Amoussou from Benin, with Patrick Okine of Ghana also taking on Ghislain Vodouhnessi of Benin to vie for the WBA Pan Africa Super Featherweight title.

Fellow Ghanaian boxers Albert Mensah and Isaac Quartey will have an opportunity to settle old scores as they clash in the WBA Pan Africa Lightweight Championship in a local derby. Kofi Manu will also take on Joseph Lamptey in a ten round Welterweight contest on the same night.
