Taxes are like that bitter pill patients swallow when they visit the doctor. A proper dose of taxation is necessary for national development. There's a lot of economic illiteracy in Africa and politicians are feeding on this. Our governments have become like a milking cow in the midst of people who live by milk alone. Yet, we don't bother to feed the same cow that produces the milk. Our advocacy should be directed towards fighting corruption and pilfering of taxes rather than the wholesale resistance towards taxation. In the advanced countries that we often cite for good living standards if they tell you the kind of taxes they pay you will realize you pay nothing. Perhaps, the difference lies in their prudent management of resources compared to us in Africa. Borrowing more sounds sweet and convenient for a nation that resist taxation but the long term consequences surpass the short-term gratification of not paying taxes. I would cut down government expenditure if I were Mr. Ruto and plug financial leakages. If your children wouldn't add effort to your huzzle but want to enjoy good living you don't borrow to fund their expensive lifestyle. You teach them financial prudence. Borrowing isn't too bad though, but the circumstances, applications, and conditionalities of those loans would mirror their necessity.
