It is nothing but shoddy work. Every device, building or anything put together by Engineers is tested against extreme, weather, temperature, and all other elements that are associated with its safety. Since we don't have the equipments to simulate such heavy downpours in Ghana, we always rely on mathematical models and incorporate them in the design.
One thing I have noticed is the sand that is used in most construction projects in Ghana is chemical unstable ( meaning that its either too saline, salty or acidic or has some chemicals that inhibit good bonding with cement and water).
This can cause a lot of structural failures. All we do in Ghana is to go to the beach and collect sand. That sand is not tested for Acidity, or other mineral deposits which can impact negatively on the bond strength.
Then using inferior parts to cut cost.
I have followed a lot of structural failures in Ghana and have written a report on that on that.
The source of sand has to be tested for its suitability before using in any construction project. I believe they had a Building Technologist or a structural Engineer on the project.
We thank God no life was taken.
A word to the wise is enough.
