Cape Town City goalkeeper laments decision to reject Michael Essien

Cape Town City goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters has lamented his side’s decision not to sign veteran Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien.

City were offered the well-travelled and highly experienced former Chelsea and Ghana midfielder but declined the player on account of his age.

The 34-year-old is on a lookout for a new home after leaving Greek side Panathinaikos, but the proposed move to City fell through.

“I think signing him would’ve been good for the club. The coach told us that he had Michael Essien’s portfolio and the name did pop up but I do not know why they never signed him," Walters told Goal.

“But if he had come, he would definitely have added some value and some experience. And he would’ve helped a lot of our players," he said.

“Maybe I am a little disappointed we didn’t get him, but there must be a reason the clubs did not sign him."
