Nobako and 'An Ewe is a goat', what exactly indicates that former President Rawlings was tribalistic in the statement Samuel Opoku Nti made about him? Nti says, "it was the love for the country, coupled with constant messages sent the team by the then head of state, Flt. Lt. J. J. Rawlings, that spurred the team on to win the trophy in Libya". When President Rawlings sent his constant messages to the Black Stars in Libya urging them to do all in their power to win the AFCON cup for Ghana, did he single out any individuals who belonged to his own ethnic group? Were the Black Stars players Ewes at all? Were the majority not Akans?
Nobako, why are you and those of your ilk so uncivilized and hateful that you write and say illogical and senseless things without knowing it?
You and some of your backward and close-minded folks often accuse President Rawlings of being tribalistic when, in fact, as statistics have shown, he appointed more Akans, especially Asantes, to positions in his administration more than members of any other group, including the Ewes. When it comes to development projects, especially infrastructure, in the country, President Rawlings again gave priority to the Ashanti and the Northern Regions than the rest; at the same time, however, he almost totally neglected the Volta Region. Indeed, the Rawlings administration's neglect of the Region displeased his people. In fact, the Volta Regional House of Chiefs also complained about it. As a result, the former President after having left office apologized to the House for his failure to pay sufficient attention to the development of the Region during his long-term administration.
But which Presidents or Heads of State were really tribalistic? If you're old enough and are not ignorant, you'd remember that as soon as Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia assumed the Prime Ministership on the ticket of the Progress Party in 1969, which party has metamorphosed into today's NPP, one of his first political acts was to pass his Apollo 568 bill that dismissed 568 workers from employment on the flimsy charge that they were incompetent. The overwhelming majority of the dismissed workers were Ewes, followed by Gas. One Ewe man, Salla, a manager of a G.N.T.C. store, who had just then been promoted for his meritorious service, challenged his dismissal at the Supreme Court, and the Court ruled in his favour. Soon thereafter, however, Busia, who and his party had claimed to be true democrats, appeared on national TV and declared that no court could tell him what to do. He thus overturned the Supreme Court's decision and let the dismissals stand.
Again, as soon as Mr. John Kufuor came to power in 2000, he followed suit Busia's example and dismissed a large number of workers, again, the majority being Ewes. An Ewe friend of mine who was an employee of the G.N.P.C., was among those who were dismissed by Kufuor, even though his position was not a political one.
Likewise, it became the policy of the Kufuor administration not to list and invite for interviews for senior civil servant positions Ewes and those bearing Ewe-sounding names. They were therefore not employed.
Now when Kufuor was asked why Asantes predominate his administration, his response was that they overwhelmingly voted for him and therefore it was appropriate for him to employ them. This fact was posted on Ghanaweb.com.
You'll also recall that it was Col. Akyeampong, later General but only to be stripped of his title upon his overthrow, who introduced into the Ghana Armed Forces during his administration the quota system of enlisting. Until that time, recruitment into the military, the police, the civil service, the prison service, the educational institutions and the judiciary was based purely on merit. Recruitment was determined purely on the basis of those who passed prescribed tests. Then non-Ewes, especially Asantes, began to complain that the tests were favouring the Ewes and therefore the majority of those recruited were Ewes. So, the Akyeampong administration scraped the merit system of recruitment into the military and replaced it with the system of the numerical strength of each ethnic group.
On the basis of the above information, who then is the real tribalist? Is it Rawlings or Busia or Akyeampong or Kufuor?
All these facts are documented and so anyone who's interested in finding the truth may do so. Of course, whenever one's mind is clouded with ethnocentric pride, prejudice and hatred, one can't easily see the facts and therefore can only make unsubstantiated and foolish statements.
