There are two groups of players who are transfered for free. These are: players who have come to the end of their contract and players who are too old. Clearly Andre Ayew is in the first category. By summer, he will be coming to the end of his contract with Marseille so if he does not renew his contract before living, he will have a free transfer. This does not mean he is cheap but rather, it will be a good opportunity for him to bargain for a good salary since the new club will not be paying transfer fee.
If there were a contract, the new club would have to buy the player out of the contract to have their own contract with him. It's all business.
