Long forgotten: The ex-world featherweight champion D.K Poison. After his bout with Sugar Ray Raymos, his career came to an end. It's been years. Until now he was forgotten. I thought he was even dead.

We must not discount the contribution of Dr Joseph Boakye Danquah, the rest oof the big six and others. In 1928 when little wasl known of African philosophy Danquah's work "Akan laws and customs and the constitution of Akim (Akyem) Abuakwa" convinced the Africans, the British and the world at large that the people of Ghana (Gold Coast) were ready for self government.
As one of the few African members of the legislative assembly he vehemently opposed the British decision to setup only one university for British West Africa in Nigeria. His action led to the decision to setup the University of Ghana - Legon.
All this was before Nkrumah came to the scene. But we must also not forget the immense contribution Nkrumah made.

This is really awful if it's true Ghana used Poison 's money to buy food for the nation. Where were his managers when it happened ? Anyway he should be paid back and in today 's equivalent. These parliamentarians have been reaping where they have not sown. Poison has done a lot for the nation and he deserves respect . No wonder the Black Stars players demanded their 'pound of flesh ' during the World Cup fiasco. Our leaders cannot be trusted.

the transaction as told by DK is weird. governments don't transact businesses like that. the people around him just capitalized on DK'S naivety, ignorance & the euphoria of being a world champion to chip off some of his purse & pocketed it in the name of the head of state.

Sali, from the way you are talking, it seems to me that you are a very young man. Ghana in those days did not have all the advance stuff you see now. DK trained with the state resources and his coaches were paid by the state, the GBA was technically his manager. When he fought in Japan, the country used his purse to import a lot of can goods from that country in exchange, he was promised to be paid but the government as corrupt as it is today did not follow through.

Gabaa is right but D.K. Poison putting the whole nation on the world boxing map and creating the hope for the likes of Prof. Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey and future pugilists mean more to Ghana than the refund he is humbly asking for. He should have a street named after him at Bukom. Prez. Mahama must do the needful regardless of DK using state resources at the time. His dedication, decent private life and concern for the sport is worthy of emulation by aspiring sportsmen and commendation from the good people of Ghana. Long healthy life I pray for you D.K. Poison.
