Most Ghanaian elderly or managerial are demanding respect and not commending one. Leaders who are admired and respected have earned that admiration and respect. Respect is given to others only when they are deemed worthy of receiving the honor. For that simple reason, leaders who demand respect from others will never get it, because respect must be given.

Opanin Kwabena Mensah,
You done very well and written in depth what I have been preaching for a while now. I cannot write explicitly as you did But I will try in short. I lived in Hamburg, West Germany for almost nine years before I moved to the United States some 30 year ago. I am 64 years young. I left Ghana when I was 26 years old. That is I have spent most of my life in Western world. Needless to state that I am highly respectful within the African and the Ghanaian community in the State I have lived for 30 years.
It sometimes gets very complex to deal with my biological children; especially those of my children born in Ghana and raised in America. I must state here also that, Ghanaians who only lived in United States without European life experience do things differently from we Ghanaians who lived in Europe and came there after to the United States.
Basically, the European reacts easy to conflicts, yet don't care to tell their opinion or their feelings as is. The European would not attempt to tell you that "blue looks like the sky". Rather, the European would tell you that, "blue is blue". Most Ghanaians cannot stand to this fact, to tell it as is nor accept the truth being told in their face. I once visited Ghana with my German friend and his beautiful wife. I was chilling with my local friends and my German friends were at a hotel over grilled guinea fowls and star beer when we discovered that my German friend's wife and one of my friends were missing for a while. These are descent people with good professions I must say. The two missing people emerged some hours latter only for my German friend wife to admit to the husband that, "yes she just wanted to know how the Ghanaian 'bumps'. Plains as it was in front of all of us. I could go on with many instances. The America in this situation would have hit the roof and turned tables around. The German husband soaked himself with more beer.
The American reacts positively and expects equal leverage; they are easy to follow negative treatment with action. Fight.
Our children come to Western world and pick up the best of the world they never expected. The ability to talk to your elders as you think. To speak your mind. Speaking your mind as a Ghanaian youngster is against the Ghanaian tradition. The adult is always right. The young keeps their head down in respect to what ever the adult says.Right or wrong.
I have written many times at different forums that, as long as GFA rely on Ghanaians footballers who pry their business abroad, GFA will always have personality and traditional conflicts with our players; if we have Coaches like Kwasi Appiah who has not lived European life to understand our young Ghanaians who has lived and acts European. Worse of it all are people like Ben Kuofie, Kwasi Nyantakyi and all other Executives like Armah and all who are typical Ghanaians, full of corruption and does operate to self glorifying interest.
I will trust the future Black Stars Coach in the hands of a Ghanaian who traded and lived in Europe. Coach Appiah, Ben Kuoffie, Nyantakyi, Armah and all the others are typical Ghanaians who cannot understand the people they suppose to handle. If they do not understand their honest approach and truthfulness, they will always have problems and difficulty to handle the players they do not understand their new life styles.

The 3 players and many more others, rather need cultural and patriotic enlightenment...........
Opanin, with all due respect, it is people like you who help breed indiscipline in our nation and fan such unpatriotic attitudes in our citizens.
How on earth can we allow such ungrateful and undisciplined characters back into the Black Stars?
Don't forget they chose not to serve their nation again. And the likes of Afriyie Ankrah and Nyantakyi went to beg them to come back.......like some spoilt brats!!!!!!!
If it was left to me alone, I would NEVER have brought the greedy and selfish lot back into the fold..... and Kwesi Appiah should rather ban them forever!
The Black Stars molded their careers for them, remember? How can we allow such lot to hold the whole nation to ransom? That is what needs to be tackled and not any cultural crap!
The education the players and our entire authorities need, is to eradicate the SLAVE MENTALITY from our society!!!
If it were to be a foreign coach, the players would have acted differently. We, even pay them more than our OWN coaches. How on earth do you think the players would think of Kwesi, then?
We need to WAKE UP! And allow Kwesi to learn on the job just like any successful country does in every aspect of their lives to reach where they are today. We are too quick to always throw the 'the MICROWAVE' approach at everything we do in our lives..............................
It's about time we make OUR OWN mistakes and find OUR OWN solutions to them. A foreign technical director or foreign coaches can NEVER win anything
for Ghana! It is our local coaches who have. It is about time the Black man wakes up and achieve on his or her own! PERIOD!
What Kwesi Appiah needs is OUR support, proper tools and a free role to express his God-given talents with the Black Stars!
It is rather the players who have to be educated to respect their OWN and stop throwing their toys out of their prams!
We need to put an end to such stupidity and stop pampering the players, once and for all. With all the skills they may posses, if you lack discipline you will achieve NOTHING in life!!!!
Take a good look at the Germans. They don't go about their business with 'microwave' solutions.....They PLAN for years!!!!!!!!!!!

This is absolute crap. Kotowing to the demands of foreign born players amounts to inferiorizing what has made us what we are; our culture. It is also disingenuous to suggest that deviancy by the youth is an accepted norm in the advanced world. On the contrary, the laws of these so called liberal lands are very alive to such perceived shenanigans. The memoirs of most world leaders or successful entrepreneurs who remain extremely beholden to the systems in which they grew, are replete with strict disciplinary measures that shaped their lives. The writer seems to ignore the fact that experience is a bona fide that is recognized and rewarded in every part of the globe. Is it not risible that when people are mired in problems these days, their first reflex is to disparage at the older generation? Did the writer check on what caused the German authorities to throw Kevin Boateng out and keep his brother Jerome? INDISCIPLINE my friend. Why should we always play second fiddle or remain subservient to any crap that is considered foreign? It is only in Ghana that those egomaniacs could do what they did and get away with it.

Our problem is that we treat these professionals as tin gods which makes them assume they are “Superior” human beings. No one forces them to play for Ghana. If they feel they are above the law, they should stay with their clubs and save us the heart burns and melodrama. Oh playing well for Ghana at the world cup exposes the players to more lucrative bids; It is not a one way street my friend.

This is not playing second fiddle to anything (what happened btn Ayew's and GFA) you must call a spade a spade but not Spoon OK! it is indiscipline on the parts of our Leaders(GFA) who want to dwell on their ego and corruption but not the players who will question why!! if they don't understand you!!! 1) In their culture they don't pay bribe to be allowed to play matches,(ALK - "if not on performance"!!! go deep into it and you will know why he said that!)
2) you don't walk over them feeling that that makes you the BOSS! you need to explain every action you take to them in a nice way and that does not mean you are not the Boss or Coach!!

Opanin Kwabena your article is right on point. KA, Ghanaians and the GFA must understand that these ball players are professionals and must be treated as such. The sooner the GFA rescinded their decision and cancelled the so called indefinite suspension of the 2 players the better. Ghana needs them. Here in the state of California, the state mandates that teachers undergo CRT (Cultural Relevant Training) to enable them deal with and appreciate minority students. The same is required of KA and the GFA for them to appreciate foreign born Ghanaians if we want to tap their talents.

Opanin Kwabena Mensah, your article in terms of facts and analysis is more than perfect and I think only fools will question that but you totally wrong by 1) choosing Kwasi Appiah who is just the coach and can be sacked today as your addressee instead of the Government (President, Minister for Youths and Sports, the government appointed commission and the GFA leadership to say the least. 2) and for me the most serious, accepting or your neutral stand on the self destructive definition of discipline in Ghana for cultural reasons. The elder, leader, boss is right and respect is a one way in the direction of the elder, leader, boss, people in authority hinders progress, sincere competition, development and undermines our very existence as a country. High level corruption and thievery, non deliverance of leaders, public and civil-servants etc are due to this very useless culture. Was Martin Amidu not sacked by late President Mills because of this very definition of discipline to allow Wayome and other foreign companies robbed Ghana millions of the county`s scarce resources? Culture is not static but dynamic and therefore subject to change. Every effort must be made to do away with that concept of discipline.

Great article and I hope the Commission takes advantage of good information like yours. Too often, the idea of discipline is used to cover up incompetence at several levels in our society. That idea is just anathema to kids born in Western Europe and North America to Ghanaian parent(s). K Appiah looks every bit like the type whon cannot take suggestions or ciriticism, if it comes from a player not born in Ghana. Unfortunately, those born in Ghana fit his idea of good and disciplined players -- simply being docile and yes men is what that Appiah guy wants. Appiah's other problem is that those players born overseas do not respect him because they know his coaching background and capacit, which to say the least is really poor. Most of these players play under some of the best coaches in club football in the world. Unless the GFA can employ a coach who will be respected by these overseas-born players, the BStars are doomed. They know a phoney when they see one, and Appiah does not cut it as far as they are concerned. Above all, respect is earned and not automatic because one is the coach. I hope someone can get taht message to him. He needs people-management,technical, and indeed coaching help, before the next competition for the BStars -- in September. The GFA should get that help particularly from overseas. Please, they ought to stay away from home-grown coaches, etc. They do not have what it takes to compete at the highest level -- WC and African competitions. Perhaps their time will come someday but now is not the time.

Thanks Opanin for your right-to point analysis. I had shared the same sentiment all along and my greatest concern is whether the coach is well trained if people management. Grant it that Mario Balloteli had signed up to play for Ghana,we would have been dealing with the Ghanaian diagnosis of indiscipline over and on. The truth is that you can work with hard to manage people to achieve results if you have the skills to get the best out of them. Here is the danger,we may find it hard to lure future foreign born prospects to sign up to play for the Black stars. Ridiculous as it may seem for the GFA to blame the poor performances at the world cup on those 3 players. We lost our chance when we lost to the USA. The coach is not technically competent as we may think.

In every group there is the leader and the led. Boateng's indiscipline stretches back to his days in the German youth team. Fact is he ended up in the Ghanaian team when he was kicked out of the German one. Then he wears 'Prince' on his back and acts like a prim donna, hoping to be treated like a king when he is nothing shot of a yob, plays for Ghana in fixtures that he deems high profile and picks up 'injuries' in the rest. We should have got Jerome; he looks more a team player and humble and wears Boateng on his shirt with pride. As for Muntari, the least said about him the better and Essien should have known better. Frankly this trio are a disgrace in Ghanaian colours. Kwesi Appiah can only get better as a disciplinarian and a tough leader otherwise these boys home bred or otherwise will walk all over him.

It will be a shame to return to the 1980/90s when Ghanaian players used to tell the manager 'I can pay your wages'. I'm sure wd can find 3 players to replace these lot or any others; nobody is irreplaceable.

The article is well written but to me Kwesi Appiah did very well as a coach. I assure you that no coach could have than better than Akwesi Appiah under this unfavourable conditions when players were fighting for their rights. Football is not only played by the legs, the mind plays greater persentage of the game. How can players win when the mind is absent? focussing on bonuses. It is surprising that nobody talks about the circumstances that prompted the unusual behaviors of the players. A
good judge listens to both parties, so I wish all are giving the democratic rights to express or defend themselves.

I applaud your comments on the performance of the Ghana Black Stars in their recent World Cup tournament in Brazil. You are absolutely right on every point. Kwasi Appiah need to reevaluate himself and ask himself if he is fit to be Ghana’s Coach. If he is then he must be prepared to learn to adopt and adjust to the different behaviors of his professional players.
Thank you for taking the time to write this fine article.
Flawed article!

Well said, akwasi Appiah need this to know about our European kids alots
I would have expected the writer to explain to his readers what he meant by cultural sensitivity.
Cultural sensitivity is what I call as" cultural differences" if that may help you understand better. Please read my post above hopefully that may help you to understand better.
I don't think Kwesi Appiah needs any sensitive training. The players were just plain rude. The burden is on the players and not the coach. Their conduct was distasteful. I have lived in America for 26 years and no one in Eur ...
