I think the past players were equally motivated, if not more, but just that they had too many difficulties to deal with. You can argue that they played more for honor than for money considering the abuse they took.

I remember the junior team went on a World Cup tournament in South Korea, they were given $6.00 a day per player bonus for the 2 to 3 weeks they were there but none of them ever received their money. The management kept the money for themselves. While certain players like Sammy Kuffour, Akunnor and others were killing themselves trying to win trophies, others like Abedi Pele and Tony Yeboah expected to be pampered all the time. Abedi Pele, during one of the AFCON matches, demanded that his airfare be paid and all his luggage be allowed duty free. It took a lot of negotiations before he arrived from Paris. So it's true that they were all mistreated but certain players were pampered more than others unlike today.

2. We went to Algeria without right boots for soggy pitch. It rained on that day and we lost.
3. When a coach made his own selection and ET Mensah disagreed he will add his own players. Ghana went to Tunisia without Sarrah Mensah because the coach didn't select. ET Mensah and co sent him there 3 days later to join the Black stars.
This and many others led to our downfall

Apart from their first goal, the equalizer, which was a clear offside, all their other goals came from the same style and the same side - I think the right back or left back, when they put a local player there. Hmm Ghana, I always knew there wer many problems with that team - and they put all the blame on poor Abedi - who was made a captain and yet the support was withdrawn from him. Many of the players simply refused to play their hearts out because they were simply politically manipulated - wickedly refusing to win so that the captain will not get any credit - a kind of sabotaging his regime!
