If crises like these occur, the coach should look for other players to play that role; not change natural midfielders to play the defence.
But if the game is going on and, let's say, a defender gets injured when substitution is exhausted or no suitable defender on the bench, the coach can order any player on the field to cover that position (for that match only).
At least that's what I see seasoned coaches like Ferguson and Wenger do.

This is time for Anaminko and Sumilia have to step up. If Ghana is a football nation, we should have players who can step up in these situations. KPB has to be in an attacking mode for this playoff. I do not really think it matters if we give up goals. The key is we should be scoring at least twice in each game. I honestly think if we score two goals is each leg we shall prevail. Let us focus on scoring.

I have this to tell Coach Appiah, if you don,t take the black stars to Brazil, you will be looking for a new job. This decision will be a general conscientious one too. Ghanaians will not be happy and they will never forgive you coach. Consequently, you got to make smart decisions. Ghana has the talent only stupid decisions by you and the technical team will fuck it up. Have your game plan and still leave room for changes.
Your game plan might have to change depending on what the other team brings to the field. Some of the little stupid decision, will by pairing a 5foot player against 6foot player. When a team dominate in height, you got to be quick with the ball on the ground. Don,t allow corner kicks in favor of your opponents. If it happens don,t let the(opponent) player be alone. Disrupt your opponent easy access to the ball. This is when the tall defenders come in.
Coach Appiah, you can either start the old and talented players or the young and talented ones first. I will mix it up in the case of Egypt. I will like to score first with Egypt before half time. Back on the second half, strong defend and light fast offense. Ball control on the ground with no interceptions. If lead by 2 goals to nothing, sole defend plays through out the game. No defend play allow for any penalty kicks.

Thank you Bro. Rastafaral. The central defence is very problematic. No Vorsah; no Jonathan Mensah and no Boye (the only experienced central defensive player to be invited. So let's see what we ve' got to face the Egyptians. Akaminko; Sumaila; Awal. Akaminko was all nerves in the match against the DRC at AFCON 2013. He lacks pace and was bamboozled by Tresor Mputa for the first goal. He was then outwitted by Mbokani(as depicted in the photograph above) and unable to recover, he pulled his shirt and conceded a penalty which resulted in the Congolese equaliser. Hope he has learnt a lesson. Sumaila and Awal are untried in the big stage. The danger is playing such a crucial match in front of the home crowd can cause them to be even more nervous. That's why I think the idea that John Mensah could be invited and assessed by the coaches to check his match fitness is an excellent one. At that moment we are taking a real gamble depending on these trio to play in central defence. I think the alternative is to shore them up with 2 defensive midfielders like Essien and Agyeman Badu to limit the pressure on the them. This is vital because we must aim to keep a clean sheet so that the Egyptians do not get further advantage with an away goal. May God help Ghana.

Soccer fury and fever grips Oseikrom again. This time its the team from revolutionary Egypt. Their coach is Bradley from the United States. The Black Stars have beaten teams coached by this guy before. Milo beat Bradley's WC2010 team by 2-1 margin. Commander Appiah disposed Bradley's revolutionary Egyptian team 3-0 in a friendly match some months ago. Nevada bookmakers will put the odds of winning the game in favor of the famous Black Stars.
Again the game will be played under the shadow of the immortal image of Baba Yara, the Champion of the Dribblers. We wish he could don the number 7 jersey for the Black Stars in this battle. But it will never happen. Due to technical problems Yara could no be recruited from the Valley of the Dead. In his heyday, Yara could turn an army of defenders ,of all skills, inside out and flat on their faces with green grass and sand in their mouths. God bless all the dead Black Stars including the recently departed powerfull Emmanuel Quarshie.
Nevertheless, the Black Stars have enough firepower, dribblers, experienced midfielders, versatile defenders and reliable goalkeepers to win the battle.
Coach Appiah should analyze the videos and scouting reports on coach Bradley and his team from Egypt. Bradley has limited arsenal against the Black Stars due to retirement of experienced Egyptian players and the turmoil in the land. But Appiah should take them very seriously. The Egyptians may use one or more of the following strategies:
(1)Launch a crazy kamikaze attack against the Black Stars right from the beginning of the match with the hope of dismantling Appiah's game plan. They could use short passes, superb dribbling skills and accurate and powerful shots to rattle the Black Stars early. This technique was used by Manchester City against Manchester United leading to a 4-1 victory, a few weeks ago. If the Egyptians try this approach Appiah will see this early and let our dynamic midfield warriors hold them back fiercely without yielding. The Black Stars must return fire immediately, using long range shots from Essien, Kwadwo Asamoah, Sulley Muntari and the Prince. If the game settles down we could revert to the 3-5-2 cum 3-4-3 cum 3-5-2 formation.
(2)The American coach Bradley and the Egyptians could have their forwards play tikatika football in our penalty box hoping to be fouled for a penalty or a red card for Ghana. If this happens it could be a game changer. Appiah should practice playing with 10 men for 90 minutes and work out strategies for such scenarios of battle.
(3)Coach Bradley could adopt the 'safety first' style and play the 4-3-2-1 or 4-2-3-1 grinding formation which is different from the Serbian 'all flair' 4-3-2-1. The attempt here is to smoulder or choke the Black Star offense whilst making occasional raids into the Black Stars' penalty area. The aim here is to secure a draw at Oseikrom and flee to Egypt for the second leg.Appiah will be able to diagnose this very early and defeat them.
One more thing. Appiah must be careful with the line-up selections even if he has the cream of the best players in camp.
FLASHBACK:
In 1964 Ghana's soccer was its best with lots of talent. Coach Josef Ember , the Ghanaian coach was lured by the Nigerians and was replaced by the German-trained and Brazil polished CK Gyamfi.Just before the Black Stars left Ghana to the Olympic games in Tokyo , President Kaunda requested for a B team to play in the Zambian independence tournament. Coach Gyamfi used this opportunity to get rid of the circus dribblers, Osei Kofi, Kwame Adarkwa, and Amusa Gbadamosi in favor of fast wingers and thunderbolt shooters. Whilst the circus dribblers came from 0-3 to defeat the Zambian team in October 1964, the Black Stars were beaten 5-1 by Egypt in a controversial match. Mfum's thunderbolt shot made the score 1-0 till half-time. During the break the Black Stars 're-fueled' maybe with 'ice-water' and were too drowsy to play the game. There were also rumours that the president Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah 'showboy' and the Arabian beauty Fathia of Egypt had something to do with the loss to Egypt ,instead of blaming the team.
