At this point Essien is a great substitute when you need an experienced holding midfielder. I would not start him and expect him to handle an entire 90 minute game. The injuries and age have indeed caught up with him.

He is good to have on the team just for stability at the end of games if we are in the lead or if there is a situation where we need to hold onto a draw. He is great but he has lost a step. he is a great player no doubt, but he is out of gas, stamina out-weighs him. he sure deserves an oceans of praise.
At this point Essien is a great substitute when you need an experienced holding midfielder. I would not start him and expect him to handle an entire 90 minute game. The injuries and age have indeed caught up with him.
