The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has defended Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz amid criticisms of his style of play.

The Portuguese gaffer came under fire for his defensive approach in several matches at the 2026 World Cup, particularly against England.

Although Ghana qualified for the Round of 32, they were eliminated by Colombia, sparking calls for a change in tactics.

Reacting to the criticism, Okraku dismissed the concerns, arguing that style of play has not won Ghana a major title in over 40 years.

“Whether 47 years or 45 years, style has not taken us anywhere. That’s the truth. People hate it when I speak like this, but style has not brought us the AFCON. We’ve not won it,” he said in an interview with 3Sports.

He further questioned fans’ mentality, asking whether they preferred results or flamboyant football:

“Now, what did you make of the style against Colombia? Was it the same as the style against England? My answer is no. Did we get the desired result against England? Yes. Did we get the desired result against Colombia? No. What do we want as a people?”

Okraku also noted that Queiroz had limited time to prepare before the World Cup, which affected his ability to fully implement his tactics.

He expressed confidence that with more time, the coach’s style could evolve.

“The man took over barely two months before the World Cup, had to scout around the clock, assemble a squad, and develop the right strategy. It wasn’t easy. Anyone in his position would have acted the same way, trying to get the best out of the players given the circumstances. Over time, with more opportunities to work with the team, the style and approach may change,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the GFA has confirmed that Carlos Queiroz will continue as Black Stars head coach ahead of the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
