Desmond Ofei has emerged as a leading internal candidate to take over as head coach of the Black Stars if the Ghana Football Association (GFA) decides against extending Carlos Queiroz’s contract.

Queiroz, who signed a four-month deal in April 2026, is expected to leave the position when his contract expires in August 2026, unless an extension is agreed.

The Portuguese coach guided Ghana to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but negotiations over a new deal have reportedly stalled amid disagreements over his demands.

Ofei is considered a strong option because of his familiarity with the current squad and the wider national-team setup. He currently serves as Queiroz’s assistant, having previously worked in the same capacity under former Black Stars coach Otto Addo.

The 38-year-old has also gained experience as a head coach at youth level, having led both the Black Satellites and Black Meteors. He was also placed in temporary charge of the senior national team for a friendly against Mexico when Queiroz was unavailable.

However, there is reportedly no consensus within the GFA Executive Council over his possible promotion.

While some members support Ofei, others are concerned about the potential public reaction to appointing an assistant as the permanent head coach.

The GFA is also exploring external options, with Executive Council member Nana Oduro Sarfo confirming that discussions with other coaches are ongoing.
