A heated exchange erupted on live television between sports broadcaster Patrick Osei Agyemang, popularly known as Songo, and Ghana Olympic Committee President Osei Assibey over the country’s performance at the just-ended 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The debate centred on Ghana’s medal return after the country sent about 40 athletes to the competition but came away with just two medals.

Osei Assibey defended Ghana’s campaign, arguing that despite the limited medal haul, the athletes performed creditably and the experience would help the country improve at future competitions.

Songo, however, strongly disagreed with that assessment, insisting that the performance should be described honestly rather than being presented as a success.

He argued that with only two medals from such a large contingent, officials should acknowledge that Ghana fell short and focus on how to improve instead of repeatedly saying the country did well.

Assibey pushed back, maintaining that Ghana still performed better than some countries that participated in the Games but returned home without a medal.

According to him, winning two medals meant Ghana had something tangible to show for its participation and should therefore not be dismissed as having performed poorly.

Songo, however, remained unconvinced, pointing out that several other countries won considerably more medals than Ghana.

He argued that Ghana’s performance should be judged against the overall competition rather than simply against countries that failed to win any medals.
