The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Richard Akpokavie, has revealed that the weather conditions in Glasgow, Scotland, affected the performances of some Ghanaian athletes at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games.

According to him, heavy rainfall on a particular day disrupted competitions, making it difficult for athletes to deliver medal-winning performances. He noted that even athletes who managed to win admitted in interviews that the wet conditions posed challenges.

“In fact, yesterday the weather was a problem. Even for those who won, in their interviews they talked about it and said it was a problem because it was very wet. So, you know, jumping, you have to take off and everything. So it affected it,” he told Citi Sports.

Akpokavie lamented that the conditions contributed to high jumper Rose Yeboah’s inability to secure a medal, though he expressed confidence in her future.

“We were disappointed because we believed she could have easily won a medal for us since the highest was 1.93m. Even if she had cleared 1.88m or 1.90m, she would have won a medal. But well, it has happened. We are looking forward to the future. She’s a prospect for the Olympic Games as well. So we’ll see what we can do to ensure she prepares well for the Olympics,” he added.

The GOC President indicated that despite the setbacks, he remains optimistic that Team Ghana will win more medals in upcoming events to add to Zinabu Issah’s silver medal.

“Not yet. I’m hopeful that we’ll win a few more medals. I am very hopeful that we’ll get a gold medal for the first time in so many years. Probably in boxing or athletics, one of them,” Akpokavie noted.
